FRED BASON

b

Frederick Thomas Bason (1907-1973) was a Cockney author, bookseller, diarist, toymaker, cigarette card collector, autograph hunter, tipster, writer, lecturer, bibliophile and columnist who hobnobbed with literary celebrities like G. Bernard Shaw, W. Somerset Maugham, James Agate, John Drinkwater, Arnold Bennett, Walter de la Mare, Leonard Strong, Noel Coward and Michael Sadleir.

FRED BASON’S bibliography:

  • A bibliography of the writings of William Somerset Maugham (1931)

  • Gallery unreserved : a collection of experiences, opinions and stories connected with the Gallery and Galleryites (1931)

  • Cigarette Card Collector’s Handbook and Guide (1938)

  • Summer (1963)

  • Autumn : Swinburne and other things (1967)

Like Robert Lynd, he was a genius non-fiction author and is nowadays seemingly unknown and out-of-print. The world will be a better place when we ran into strangers in the train who are reading Fred Bason or Robert Lynd instead of some contemporary fiction beach-read.
